When was the last time you had to revamp your resume? The hardest part for me was trying to think about the value I can bring to businesses in terms of outlining the skills that would be the most useful to them and conveying why that skill made me a more valuable hire option. But something almost magical happens when you start planning a wedding on your own as you work through the struggles you are faced with on the regular. 

For example, two years after my sister had married and finished her bachelor’s degree… she applied for a job as a events assistant for a casino. After interviewing for the position and talking about her skill-building experiences, she was offered the opportunity to be the companies events, general manager. Sure they were interested in the school knowledge, but they really asked questions about her wedding experience. Showing all she had done on her own as a DIY bride really demonstrated her dedication and passion for the management role and had a huge impact on the hiring decision.

To test that the process of planning a wedding was, in fact, a highly valued position in other industries, I decided to test the theory myself by creating my own resume and putting it out onto indeed.com to see if I would gain any traction.

Within the first 6 hours of releasing the resume to the area, I had an interview request from a local car dealership offering me a high-level office position working with the state of Michigan and sales records. The interview went well and they asked many questions about my experience with managing multiple projects simultaneously, how I’d managed others before and about any other relevant skills I had developed.

In today’s post, we’re talking about the top 4 skills that you’ll develop while planning your wedding that is highly valuable to your employer!

As it would turn out, there are many facets of planning a wedding that amounts to highly valued skills that can help you raise your income bracket. The first of the five we are going to talk about today is the skill of project management.

Project Management

Project management is the role of creating a plan for developing a project, setting goals, hiring a team, and managing the team to achieve the set goals. The most important part of this role is the ability to be detail focused and creating an actionable plan to achieve the ultimate goal. Employers use this skill for many things like management positions and planning for the new month or managing a team of people and their schedules. This can also be used for scheduling patients or clients as a receptionist that is required to create or maintain fluid organizational systems and keep in touch with workers and clients.

Team Management

The next role that stands out for employers is having the experience of team management. This position is valuable because it demonstrates that you have hired a team, scheduled, trained, and managed a team of people to reach the goals that you have set for the wedding day. As an employee, they can expect that you have had the basic experience that can be built on with their team training – ultimately a perfectly clean slate for them!

Budget Management

Budget management is taken to a whole new level when you are working with a set budget number and don’t break that number. Proving that you’ve set an extensive budget, broken it down into manageable expense categories, and spent the funds strategically to accomplished the goals. Before the business trusts any significant decision making with you, they have already been shown that you can think strategically with focus and have a clear understanding of how to get the most from the dollar. You would be a great asset for their team!


Training is a highly valued skill that requires you to be able to take a vision, devise a training plan and execute it with the new team members so everyone on the team is ready to perform and hit the goals. When you’re beyond the hiring part of wedding planning you are in the phase of detailing your vision and communicating it in a clear and understandable way with all of the vendors. Making sure that each vendor understands exactly what is expected for your wedding design and their performance is critical and needs to be uniform with the entire team.

At the end of the day event managers, project managers, employment trainers, assistants, and much more high five and six-figure positions leverage each of these skills. Taking the time to work through the stages of planning for your wedding can be just what you needed to finally land that new job or maybe even promotion you’ve been hoping to get. Focus on the tasks at hand in whatever time you have to dedicate and you will be surprised by the true scope of skills you will develop during this time as a bride.
